Colon surgery is actually a very common occurrence. This is kind of a shame as it is not something that anybody would want to go through. The fact of the matter is, while most people consider cancer to be the only reason that colon surgery is performed there are actually many different reasons why it could happen. Some of the more common occurrences for colon surgery include diverticulitis, twisting and other complications of the colon such as polyps. Colon surgery complications are actually a common occurrence although they are becoming less and less all of the time. Here are some of the problems that you may have to face if you are going to go through this type of surgery.
Depending on the type of surgery that you have and the invasiveness of your particular problem, the complications could be small or large. There is a condition which is known as ileus which is where the muscles that contract the large intestine and force the feces through it may become lazy for a few days and you might have some problems passing your bowels. If this is the case, you might have to stay in the hospital for a while in order to be fed intravenously. There is also the problem that could occur where a blockage from the incision in the colon keeps you from passing your bowels and would have to be addressed either surgically or otherwise. Some of the worst problems that could happen are infections at the site of the surgery which does happen from time to time. The medication that you are taking after colon surgery can also cause some problems for you, especially if you are susceptible to problems to that type of medication.
If the surgery took place because of diverticulitis, there is a whole host of problems that could occur that range from infections to blockages. Bleeding rarely happens whenever you have colon surgery because of diverticulitis but if it does, it generally shows up whenever you evacuate your bowels. Infection is a much more common problem but can typically be treated with antibiotics. If you have a particularly bad infection it may be necessary for your doctor to keep you in to the hospital for a while while the infection clears up. Abscesses in the colon is also a common occurrence and depending on the size, you may also have to take antibiotics to clear it up. One of the worst problems that can happen as a result of colon surgery complications is an intestinal obstruction. This is typically caused by scarring from the surgery that was performed and it keeps you from being able to pass the waste through your large intestine normally. A partially blocked large intestine will cause discomfort and an inconvenience at the very least but a totally blocked intestine will require emergency surgery.
You will have to weigh the possibilities of colon surgery complications with your doctor. They will be able to help you to make an informed decision as far as whether you should go with the surgery or try another method of clearing up your colon problems. At times, surgery is necessary and if this is the case, your doctor will let you know. Preparing ahead of time for the surgery is one of the best ways to make sure that you reduce the amount of complications that can occur.
