Typically, removal of the part of the colon that is affected by the cancer is the direction that many doctors will go in. This is done by a process known as open colectomy, where the cancerous portion of the colon is totally removed from the body. It might also be possible that the entire colon is removed depending on the stage of the cancer although this will be the last resort. Surgery may also be required in order for the doctor to pinpoint the location and type of cancer that you have. This would give them a clear picture of the type of options that they have to treat your colon cancer. Local Excision: This is a process in which they will remove the cancerous portion and a little bit of surrounding tissue in order to make sure that they have gotten all of the cancer. Anterior Resection: This is a process where they will remove the cancerous area and also some of the surrounding tissue on either side of the cancer and the lymph nodes. They will then reconnect the colon. A similar process is known as low anterior resection if the cancer is present in the lower colon. Extended Resection: If this process is chosen then it is probably because your cancer is advanced in nature. It may also have spread into surrounding organs and areas of the body. This is a rather extensive operation and is typically done along with chemotherapy treatments.
