The human body is capable of taking a lot of abuse. There are times, however, when it may be giving the signs that something is wrong. One of the worst things that can happen to a person is for them to develop cancer, either in the colon or other area of the body. Not only is this mentally stressful, it is also a physical condition which causes a lot of problems for the person as well as their family. It is thought that almost all diseases in the body start in the colon. If you are facing surgery because of having colon cancer there are some options for you to consider. In fact, there are several colon cancer surgery procedures that are available and you should make sure that you discuss these with your doctor before treatment is administered.
At times, it may not even be necessary for you to have surgery in order to treat your colon cancer. A couple determining factors for what types of procedures will be done would include this stage of the cancer as well as the type of the cancer that you have. It is possible for nonsurgical procedures to be done if the cancer is caught at an early stage. For that reason, it is often a good idea for you to get checked on a regular basis so that early detection is an option. Surgery for colon cancer is still the primary treatment that is often found. Here are some of the different procedures that are available.
Typically, removal of the part of the colon that is affected by the cancer is the direction that many doctors will go in. This is done by a process known as open colectomy, where the cancerous portion of the colon is totally removed from the body. It might also be possible that the entire colon is removed depending on the stage of the cancer although this will be the last resort. Surgery may also be required in order for the doctor to pinpoint the location and type of cancer that you have. This would give them a clear picture of the type of options that they have to treat your colon cancer. If surgery is required in order to remove part of your colon, here are the colon cancer surgery procedures that will probably be looked at.
Local Excision: This is a process in which they will remove the cancerous portion and a little bit of surrounding tissue in order to make sure that they have gotten all of the cancer.
Anterior Resection: This is a process where they will remove the cancerous area and also some of the surrounding tissue on either side of the cancer and the lymph nodes. They will then reconnect the colon. A similar process is known as low anterior resection if the cancer is present in the lower colon.
Extended Resection: If this process is chosen then it is probably because your cancer is advanced in nature. It may also have spread into surrounding organs and areas of the body. This is a rather extensive operation and is typically done along with chemotherapy treatments.
You should discuss, in length, all of these colon cancer surgery procedures with your doctor before making your decision. Remember, your doctor is working for you and should take the time to explain all of these in detail to you so that you are able to make the best decision for you and your family.
