The Colon is an amazing piece of creative work. Unfortunately, it is also where many diseases in the body begin. There are several different types of colon cancer surgery that can be done and your doctor will certainly discuss these with you in advance. Depending on the type of cancer that you have, it may be possible that you have the type of surgery that is less invasive than another. If the cancer has really taken root, it might be necessary for your doctor to remove a large portion or perhaps all of your colon. There is also the possibility that your doctor will discover additional problems once he has begun the surgery. After the colon cancer surgery has taken place, the recovery will begin. This takes place in several different phases which will include your postoperative stay in the hospital as well as recovery time at home. The doctors will want to make sure that you do not have a problem with infections or other complications such as blockages. After a period of time, you will be able to go back on to your regular diet although you will want to modify it according to your doctor's instructions. By taking preventative measures after your colon cancer surgery has taken place you will help to ensure that you do not have a recurrence. Although it will take effort on your part, it will be well worth it if the cancer is gone from your body permanently.
